Giving under ABPI
We know it may be difficult to navigate the ABPI Code of Practice when you want to support patient advocacy.
We are delighted to share with you our ABPI-friendly giving opportunities which have been designed with these guidelines in mind.
Donations or Grants will be:
Documented and transparent
Non-promotional
Free from influence over prescribing
Unconnected to lobbying or political advocacy
ABPI-friendly opportunities
-
Funding CRM systems, volunteer training, or admin capacity to improve patient communication
Sponsorship of UPA’s website accessibility or technical upgrades
Support for event costs where the event itself is clearly educational or support-focused (not advocacy-oriented)
FOR EXAMPLE: Sponsor our Vapour Therapy event in September (see events page on website)
-
Awareness days/weeks on conditions treated with CBPMs (e.g. chronic pain awareness)
Patient storytelling projects, provided they are not promotional and don’t reference specific medicines
Distribution of safety information or general medication guidance (e.g. travel, driving, storing)
-
Patient education sessions (e.g. “Understanding Your Prescription,” “How Medical Cannabis Works”)
Public health workshops (e.g. pain management, sleep, mental health)
Educational webinars/podcasts with expert panels (as long as UPA maintains control of content and speakers disclose affiliations)
Printable or digital educational toolkits (e.g. “A Patient’s Guide to Cannabis-Based Products for Medicinal Use (CBPMs)”)
-
Data Collection and Reporting
Surveys and anonymised patient experience studies (e.g. annual “UPA Patient Survey”)
Non-interventional case study series shared anonymously to identify systemic barriers to care

“Donations and grants to healthcare organisations, patient organisations or other organisations are only allowed if they:
Are made for the purpose of supporting healthcare, scientific research or education
Do not constitute an inducement to recommend and/or prescribe, purchase, supply, sell or administer specific medicines
Are prospective in nature
Do not bear the name of any medicine – although they may bear the name of the company providing them.”
